Berrettini wins MercedesCup

This year’s MercedesCup winner is Matteo Berrettini. The 23-year old Italien won the exciting finale at Stuttgart’s Weissenhof against 18-year old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in 1:47 hours 6-4, 7-6(11).

Berrettini only had to save two break points throughout the whole week (both against Jan-Lennard Struff in the semis). In the finals, he was mostly untouchable on serve. Though serving 16 aces (Berrettini only 6) Auger-Aliassime struggled at times when on serve. Berrettini converted his first break point to take a 2-1 lead in the first set and then went on to serve out the set.

Tie-break thriller
In the second set, Berrettini once again had three break points at 2-2 and 0-40, but Auger-Aliassime was able to save them all. The set – and in the end the match – had to be decided in the tie-break. Auger-Aliassime had two set points at 6-4, but Berrettini saved both. After that it was a see-saw battle, in which Auger-Aliassime had five set points, but ultimately it was Berrettini who converted his third match point to take the match.
